Shaft Deflection

Click to Enlarge

The deflection of the shaft has to be limited to within the misalignment limits of the bearing and seal assemblies.

The calculation of shaft deflection is based on a simply supported beam.

q =  0.083373 x P x c x
d4

q = Shaft deflection (arc minutes) P = Load on roll (N)
c = Support distance (mm) = Bearing centres (mm)
d = Shaft Diameter (mm)

In general the following bearing misalignments are allowable:

Bearing type Allowable
misalignment
Value used
in calculation
Taper Roller Bearing 2 minutes
Deep Groove Ball Bearing 2 - 10 minutes 8 minutes
Seize Resistant Bearing Up to 13 minutes 10 minutes

Note: 1 arc minute = 1/60 Degree
